Baseball commentary: Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds

by Bruce Bostwick

Created on: April 08, 2008

Hank Aaron depending on some people's viewpoint will be seen as the true king instead of Barry Bonds. Aaron didn't celebrate it at all and kept away from it. The only thing that happened the minute Barry broke the record was that a video congratulating him on accomplishing the goal instead of being there face to face. I'm sure Hank Aaron has his reasons for doing this. It might have been thought of as something to do with the steroids controversy that's following Barry Bonds. Though it might seem selfish, you may be able to see his point of view when it comes right down to it. I can respect his choice on deciding to step away and not wanting to celebrate it. Mr. Bonds however must look at himself

Are we going to be debating this? Baseball was slightly different then than it is now. Though the schedules were the same but the question is which one is the genuine king? Based on stats, Bonds has the advantage based on numbers but what about controversy? Controversy seems to Barry like a magnet. There is no doubt that Barry is a solid player and has done a lot in his career. You can't deny that he can play, as steroids didn't give him talent automatically. While I will admit his Home Run total skyrocketed in the last seven seasons, there has been no evidence at least not to the public on his failed steroids test. Once that comes down, then you shall go from there.

I never saw Hank Aaron play, as I wasn't born yet to be honest. His record dictates that his Home Run numbers were pretty consistent season after season. He probably faced some issues mainly due to the fact that he was passing Babe Ruth's record and let's not forget Babe Ruth didn't have a 162-game schedule so in hypothetical terms it's a wonder how many Home Runs he would have hit if he had 8 games added to each season he played. Don't take it as a knock on Aaron because it's far from that. Do think of it as a history lesson on that and may have something to do with him not showing up in person when the record was broken when the Giants were at home.

At least Hank Aaron for some people had an audio message congratulating Bonds and wished him well. It's a lot better than getting nothing. Though he wasn't there physically to shake Bonds hand, Hank Aaron doesn't hate him, he just chose not to be involved and you have to respect his decision.
