How should we lead our children to God

"Look!" our three-year-old squealed while atop her Daddy's shoulders. "I can almost touch the moon!"

When it comes to leading your children to God, one of the best places to start is with the creation. Learn to watch for precious moments to "diligently teach your children when you sit in your house, when you lie down, when you rise up and when you walk in the way ..." (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

What better place to introduce your child to God than the great outdoors? Rediscover the delight of going barefoot in the grass. Kneel down and study all the little critters you find there. Are ants scurrying by? Remind your child that God commends ants for their hard work (Proverbs 6:6-8). While gathering acorns in the fall, tell your child that oak trees don't produce acorns until they are 20 years old. How about taking a blanket outdoors on a clear night to count stars? Learn from the example of our Lord, Who spent much of His time outdoors. He used the Creation to teach important truths, and we can, too.

Raising flowers, fruits or veggies? You'll find God's hand at work while growing things. Talk about bees and how they help pollinate plants and trees. Let your son plant his own vegetable or flower garden; discuss how God's sunshine and rain help it grow. While gathering produce, count the rows of kernels on an ear of corn and the stripes on a watermelon. There will always be an even number! God designed His creation with attention to detail, and the garden is a perfect place to point this out.

How about a trip to the zoo for a real creature-feature? From the timid, spotted fawn to the roaring lion; the athletic orangutan to the skittering lizard, a zoo has lots of amazing animals to discover. Did you know the elephant is the only quadruped (four-legged animal) whose knees all bend forward? Yes, and these powerful fulcrums help lift the pachyderm when it needs to stand up. Did you notice the giraffe's distinct design, the zebra's zany stripes (no two zebras are alike) and the peacock's glorious fan of feathers? God is the Master Designer, and the zoo is a perfect place to discover this.

At the beach, you'll find footprints in the sand, but you'll also find "God's fingerprints" all around you. Flip a starfish over and study those tiny suction cups on its legs. Without them, a starfish couldn't pry apart the clams and oysters in his diet. Explore delicate seashells and pieces of driftwood, noting their textures. Count the ocean waves as they come in. There will always be 26
