Knowing some common ailments that your horse might have is very important to know for your horse's health. Below is a list of some common ailments which needs to be taken care of if your horse has any of them.
1. Colic. There are two kinds of colic in horse's, flatulent and spasmodic. Flatulent colic is caused by too much gas in the stomach, or eating to much to fast, and eating bad hay. Horses do usually recover from this quickly. Spasmodic colic is much more serious and is caused by a disorder in the stomach, a blocked bowel causing constipation or something else might be causing acute pain. When the colic is serious it is time to call your vet at once. Serious systems is when you see your horse sweating, uneasiness, pawing the ground, rolling, getting up and down, and groaning.
Strangles. This type of disease is found often in young horse's, it is a highly infectious disease and the horse will have a high temperature. System's for this is a runny nose and cough, nasal discharge will be thick and yellow and usually there will be swelling in the upper branches of the jaw, which turns into a abscess.
Colds and Coughs. Always, dry throughly your horse from wet and moist or else he could catch a cold. Don't let your horse be cold. If this does happen right away keep him warm with a extra clothing and to give plenty of fresh air, with no drafts. Be sure to wash out his nose continually and apply some cold cure to his nostrils. Do this same with the cough also, and give him some cough syrup. If your horse has a serious cough, do not allow him to do any strenuous exercise until he's recovered. Doing strenuous exercise before the cough has ceased can cause the lungs and impair the wind permanently.
Worms. The most deadly worms for horses is the blood sucking ones, which infect the whole system by perforating the walls of the intestine. Tapeworm, feeds on the food in the stomach and interferes with the digestive juices. Worms that are not damageable to the body are the milk worm, thread-worm will only deprive him of nourishments and make him feel uncomfortable.
Obtain your treatments from the vets is best.
Horse's are beautiful animals, and keeping them healthier for years to come will give you and him lots of enjoyment.
