We live our lives in a world that is, for many of us, full of stress, constantly busy, and getting increasingly fast-paced. One of the side effects of this lifestyle can be anxiety. Ranging from short-term anxiety relating to a particular event all the way to anxiety that seems to have no relief and is constantly there lurking in the background just waiting to come out in a full-blown panic attack, this ailment is very real and can be very frightening.
The effects of anxiety can be different from one person to the next. Some of the most common are:
*sleeplessness/restlessness
*fear (that knot in the pit of your stomach feeling), that may be founded or unfounded
*muscle tension and weakness
*depression
*lack of concentration
*lack of motivation
*feeling out of control of your life
*physical symptoms ranging from upset stomach to tightness in the chest, leading some to believe they are suffering a heart attack
Below are some alternative treatments that may assist you in the relief and control of the symptoms of anxiety. For some, adding these methods and activities to your life can avoid the use of prescription drugs, which can be addictive and dangerous over an extended period of use.
1)Prayer and spirituality-We are all physical beings with a spirit. Feeding our spirit with healthy things is important, just as feeding our bodies with nutritious items is. Prayer and Scripture recitation is essential to our spirit's health. The Bible states that, "God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Remind yourself of this daily!
2)Exercise-There are so many forms of exercise available to us that there is something for anyone. You may find yoga to be right up your alley with its deep breathing and stretching to relax the mind and body. A walk outside in the fresh air and nature's beauty is another great way to reduce tension. Most fitness clubs offer an assortment of classes to choose from.
3)Herbal remedies-Valerian root, passion flower, and chamomile are known for their sedative qualities. They assist in the relief of insomnia, as well. These can be drank in a tea form, or taken in drops or pills. St. Johns Wort may be used to relieve the depression that often accompanies the symptoms of anxiety.
4)Diet-Limit or cut out altogether sugar and caffeine. Nicotine is also known to increase the effects of anxiety.
5)Acupuncture-Though not as common in the Western world, acupuncture has been used since in ancient times in Eastern cultures as a medical tool for many ailments, including anxiety.
6)Relaxing habits and routines-Take time for you! Grab a good book, run a warm bubble bath, and light a lavender candle. You may be amazed at the stress relief you can attain in this seemingly simple therapy!
