I didn't exactly find success on the Internet.
Success found ME on the Internet.
You see, I spent the better part of a decade working in the Information Technology field as a network admin. I enjoyed the work for the first couple of years, and the pay was wonderful. Unfortunately, by the time I'd done it for 8 years, I was burnt out by the late nights and thankless mundane tasks. I was bored, depressed and anxious. Still, I'd probably have kept on working in that particular job until I retired.
Then, one morning while I was drinking coffee at my desk, I was fired. My boss decided that he didn't like the job I was doing. In a way, it was fine; I didn't particularly care for the job he was doing either.
At that point, I wasn't really sure what to do. I was devastated, and spent the better part of a year wrapped up inside my own thoughts. Finally, I enrolled in a Master's degree program, and started working on my M.A. in Humanities. You see, I had always wanted to teach college, and this program would give me the qualifications and education I need to do that, at least at the community college level.
But, a funny thing happened on the way to getting my graduate degree. A friend asked me to write some articles for her parenting and pregnancy web site. That started a chain of events in motion that I never could have imagined. I finished my Master's degree, but didn't go into teaching as I'd planned.
I had found my new career as an Internet writer.
That was five years ago as I write this article. I am amazed at the journey that my writing career has taken. I've gone from a newbie Internet writer with a single client to a high-demand Internet writer who has to refuse work. I even write my own blog where I help other Internet writers to learn how to experience the same sorts of success that I have experienced. It's been a heck of a ride with plenty of ups and downs. I've made plenty of mistakes along the way, too. But I've become successful enough as an Internet writer that I can provide for my wife and three children, make a house payment, and sock away a little bit of money for retirement and my kids' college funds.
All because I got fired. Isn't life grand?
