Christianity and postmodernism

Created on: April 07, 2008

Postmodernism is a big word. It's a big deal, too. Postmodernism is the idea that all beliefs are ok. There is no one true god or religion, all beliefs are individual and should be determined by each person. This ideology directly conflicts with Christianity, which claims that there is only one ultimate truth and one true God. Ultimate truth does not leave room for other beliefs, so the onset of postmodernism has caused Christians to review evangelism and outreach techniques, and reaffirm their belief in ultimate truth.

This is America. Religious beliefs are certainly up to the individual, but just because other people believe in something does that make it true? Should Christians accept the beliefs of other people? Postmodernism directly confronts the idea of ultimate truth. One of the fundamental ideas of Christianity is that there is ultimate truth, and that ultimate truth is found in the true God.

Accepting and loving followers of other religions is completely different than postmodernism. Christians are called to love others, that call reaches across nations, ethnicities, and religions. However, Christians are never called to accept other religions as truth.

My good friend Baseeret is Hindu and I am a Christian. That difference hasn't made a difference in our friendship, but it has really changed my faith. The fact that I am a Christian and belief there is only one true God doesn't mean I am a bad Christian. Instead, Baseeret's curiosity and questions have encouraged me to grow in the knowledge of what I believe in Christ and why I believe it. Learning about her religion has been interesting, but it has also reminded me how awesome God is and how important it is for me to share His message with other people.

Christians should always love other people, especially non-Christians, but they should also be ready to explain why they believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and why that belief is so incredible.

Stock up on knowledge
There are a lot of great books that explore the reliability of Christianity and ultimate truth of God. A few good ones to check out are:
More than a Carpenter by Josh McDowell
A Case for Christ by Lee Strobel
Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
