Drink recipes: Sloe comfortable screw

The Sloe Comfortable Screw is a highball cocktail recipe. The best way for new bartenders to learn the recipe is to remember that "Sloe" refers to Sloe Gin, "Comfortable" refers to Southern Comfort, and "Screw" refers to the mixture of vodka and orange juice (a Screwdriver cocktail). You are essentially making a Screwdriver "Slow and Comfortable" for the customer.

The ingredients for a basic Sloe Comfortable Screw are as follows:

3 oz ( 2 shots or 12 counts) Sloe Gin
3 oz ( 2 shots or 12 counts) Southern Comfort
3 oz ( 2 shots or 12 counts) Vodka
3 oz ( 2 shots or 12 counts) Orange Juice

Ask the customer if he wants his drink shaken, stirred, or "on the rocks". If he wants it shaken you will need to combine the ingredients with ice in a tumbler and strain it in to the glass. If he wants it stirred, then stir the ingredients after you've poured them in the glass. If he wants it "on the rocks", pour it all in to a glass of ice.

You should also ask your customer how strong he wants his drink. The above measurements are the maximum amount of each alcohol that should go in to this recipe; otherwise you might as well hand him the three liquor bottles and let him get sick all over your bar.

You will need a larger bar glass for this recipe; a Collins or highball glass is best. If your customer doesn't make any specifications, the three alcoholic components of this recipe should always be poured in to the glass first. Then you should fill the rest of the glass with orange juice. Some customers will say that they only want "a shot" of orange juice in their drink.

Do not confuse Sloe Gin with gin. Sloe Gin is a specific type of liqueur that is made from sloe berries. Southern Comfort is also a liqueur. It is a derivative of whiskey blended with peach, orange, vanilla, sugar, and cinnamon flavors. Well vodka is fine for this recipe unless if your customer has a brand preference. It also doesn't matter what brand of orange juice you use, but make sure that it is fresh and has been refrigerated.

Customers love ordering this drink because of its sexual innuendo. Many have made ordering this drink in to a game with bartenders, and this has led to countless recipe variants.

A "Sloe Fuzzy Comfortable Screw" means less than a shot of peach schnapps is added to the original recipe. A "Sloe Comfortable Screw, At Sunrise" means that the customer wants a shot of tequila in his drink.

A "Sloe Comfortable Screw, Against The Wall" means Galliano is added after the orange juice is poured. Galliano is an herbal liqueur that has a licorice flavor. Splashing Galliano in to any recipe makes it "Against The Wall". Adding Amaretto after the Galliano makes it "Against The Wall, With A Kiss." Adding Frangelico and whiskey after the Galliano makes it "Against The Wall, With Satin Pillows The Hard Way."

A "Sloe Comfortable Screw Against A Red Wall" has a shot of RedRum, a brand of fruit flavored rum, added on top of the Galliano.

The Sloe Comfortable Screw is a fun cocktail to make, but it's also easy for it to be ruined with too much alcohol. Always serve this drink responsibly.
