How to choose between Microsoft Windows and GNU/Linux

by Th Chan

Microsoft Windows are preferred by many users. Linux, and its various distributions are usually for power users. Windows will cost, as opposed to the open source linux community. In essence, both Microsoft and Linux products are very similar. They offer a graphical user interface, and an operating system to manage things. To decide, consider a few points. Linux is open source, for developers out there, code can be modified for your own needs. There is usually no cost involved and switching between operating system is rather easy. However, configurations, may not be as simple in Linux and the learning curve may be a lot higher. Also, the choice will depend on how you are to use your computer. Linux supports web browsing, such as with Firefox, office tools with Open Office, and image processing with GIMP. However, Linux to this date lacks many software available on the windows platform, such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, Corel Painter and many many more. It also lacks drivers - and for special, high-end hardware, this may be a daunting task to track down a driver. Then, at this time Linux has far less viruses written for it as opposed to Microsoft Windows (a reason may be the number of users). As a server machine, research shows 68% of the servers on the web use linux. This is due to less viruses, and that it proves a higher performance gain when at max capacity as compared to the same computer with windows installed.
