I've had limited success hypnotizing flies, but with a little practice and absolutely nothing else to do with your time, it can be done. Although skill is not necessary to accomplish this rare feat, I believe that actually believing that fly hypnosis is possible is critical.

Flies come in and out of our lives so often I feel they should serve us as a form of entertainment at the very least. These bothersome insects obtain plenty of fun at our expense as we swat and swear at their persistent presence. If one happens to land close enough to you, which is quite often, you too can become a fly hypnotist. Here's what you need to do to thrill yourself to no end and possibly earn a spot on a late, late night talk show.

First you should make certain the fly is comfortable with his location in front of you. I usually like to spill a drink or offer a few tiny cereal crumbs to serve as decent fly lure. If you can spare it, Captain Crunch is the optimal bait. Flies are quite smart for their size, so don't underestimate their intelligence. Once the fly starts to hang out, you can begin your devious plan to freeze him in his hairy-legged tracks!

Don't make the rookie error of trying to get too close with your first attempts. Take it from an old pro, start from far away and work your way in slowly. Take your dominant hand, the one you point at things with, and do just that pointing at the fly. I don't know if he sees you pointing at him or not, but make certain you point right at him and concentrate.

Usually the fly knows something is amiss and freezes automatically. If this happens, you are clearly in the driver's seat and can begin your hypnosis process. Take your pointer finger and move it in large circles high in the air, about shoulder height if the fly is on your desk or table top. Imagine you are forming a slowly shrinking funnel as your finger descends on the target fly. If the fly is sitting perfectly still, you have a good shot at this working.

It takes guts, but doing this in McDonald's or another public place is quite a show for people sitting nearby. As your finger gets closer and closer to the fly keep your circular motion steady and never changing. My guess is the fly is confused as to what you are up to and is just waiting and watching like most everyone else. But I've actually been able to freeze a fly and touch him on his little back with this technique. It's quite rewarding and your friends will certainly be most impressed.

I will say that female fly hypnotists are hard to find and it is equally as hard for a male fly hypnotist to impress a female watching. The only way I know you can do it is to pull off the hat trick of all hat tricks- hypnotize the fly in your off hand. I know it's hard to believe, but in the truly rare occurrence of a fly actually landing in your other hand, you should go for it! It is important you keep relaxed and totally calm as you start your invisible funnel cloud. Take your time and don't listen to all the neigh sayers around you.

Negativity and fly hypnosis don't mix. I've only pulled off the "fly in hand" trick only one time in my fun-filled life and unfortunately for me I had no witnesses present to confirm it. I celebrated with a cheer and thumped him back into flight. I know what your thinking; I learned this in solitary confinement. Wrong again! It was perfected in a high school study hall.
