Consumer scams to be aware of

How Companies Defraud You

Description: These are five popular ways companies can defraud or scam you when it is advertising its product.

Connections

Companies try to make connections with you. Have you ever seen a commercial where there is a person that reminds you of a friend or even yourself? That is exactly what they want you to think. Companies are trying to make you think the product was made for you. So, next time you see a commercial doing this think about the product again, it could save you wasted money.

Truthfully Lying

Have you ever noticed commercials say something like; with four easy payments of one hundred, this could be yours! Yes, that's a five hundred dollar deal practically for free! The commercial did not lye anywhere in there but, they made it sound like it's a good deal. In reality four payments of one hundred (100 x 4) is actually four hundred dollars. The part that says, "Yes, that's a five hundred dollar deal practically for free!" is actually an opinion. Also, when it said, "With four easy payments of one hundred, this could be yours!" it will more than likely say the, "With four," part of the, "With four easy payments this could be yours!" faster than the rest. So, next time you see or hear something like this, try to look through the truthful lies and save your well earned money.

Memory

Another way commercials could defraud you, is by making things that happen commonly have you remember their product. Have you ever seen a commercial where a sports player needs refreshment and someone gives them a sports drink? This is one good example. Let's say you have a friend, child, or you are just a fan of sports, whenever you see somebody play a sport or you play a sport you are most likely to remember the product that was being advertised. Then you buy the sports drink or whatever was being advertised, youd look at it and then realize it was a rip off. This is a way you can be defrauded.

Good Tunes

On TV, not long ago a commercial for a car company (that I just forgot) came on. It had somebody testing the cars. While doing this he somehow made the tune for "Smoke on the water" then the actual song kicked in. If you do not know, that song can really get stuck in your head (or at least it can in my opinion). That's what the company was trying to do and I think they did a pretty good job of it. Although I never actually bought a car, I was remembered it a lot. The main reason I remembered it was the song. If the song weren't there I would probably
