Anime reviews: YuYu Hakusho

"YuYu Hakusho" which is also called "Poltergeist Report" or "Ghost Files" is a 112 episode Japanese anime series directed by Noriyuki Abe and produced by Studio Pierrot. The series original run was from 1992 to 1995. It was adapted from the manga authored by Yoshihiro Togashi which original ran from 1990 to 1994 in the Weekly Shonen Jump which ran for about 19 volumes.

The world of YuYu Hakusho focuses on life and the afterlife with humans, spirits, and demons. This has a modern day feel mixed with fantasy and the supernatural. The series takes the main characters into several demon realms to accomplish several missions that prove vital to the preservation of the world let alone human life. In the series, the main protagonist is a thirteen year old middle school student named Yusuke Urameshi. At the start, Yusuke does not look like your typical hero.

He's the son of Atsuko, a single mother. Atsuko had Yusuke at 15 years of age. In short, Atsuko is not much of a good mother. For the most part, Atsuko spends most of her time drinking to the point that she is an alcoholic. As a result, Yusuke gets into numerous fights with other delinquents in the city. In short, Yusuke hates life. But that soon takes a change when Yusuke does an act of heroism, in which nobody had seen coming. Yusuke saved a little boy from a speeding car. The boy survived unscathed. However, Yusuke got "killed" and sent to the afterlife.

At the start, Yusuke is a ghost as he must do a few tasks for Koenma, the son of King Yama. After Yusuke is revived, he is made a Spirit Detective for the Spirit Realm as he must investigate demonic cases. It is unknown until later on how Yusuke has strong spiritual powers.

For the most part, Yusuke has to balance out school and his job as a Spirit Detective. Still, Yusuke acts like a juvenile delinquent in which several conniving teachers are working hard to get rid of him.

Throughout the series, Yusuke makes friends and enemies.

For his missions, Yusuke is assisted by Botan who is the grim reaper. Botan is the one that gives Yusuke his missions. The orders from Botan come from the top of the chain of command. For the most part, Yusuke is assisted by Kazuma Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama.

Kuwabara is the second toughest kid in school. However, he does possess an ability that Yusuke does not: a high sensitivity to spiritual power. He can turn his spiritual energy into glowing swords.

Hiei is a full demon who wields a katana and can move at superhuman speeds. He has the Jagan eye that allows him to summon fires from the demon realm.

Kurama is a fox demon trapped in the body of a human boy. He has the abilities of plant knowledge and plant manipulation.

Humorously enough, neither of them are buddies with each other. Yusuke and Kuwabara are former rivals and are not the best of friends. Hiei and Kuwabara get into bickering matches with one another. Kurama is the only intelligent and disciplined one of the group.

YuYu Hakusho is an interesting series to watch with interesting story arcs in which the characters develop themselves and their abilities. However, some of the fight scenes are drawn out too long which can last several episodes. Still, this is a great series with plenty of martial arts action.
