Acid reflux: Herbal remedies that work

Acid reflux is an ailment that affects millions of people in the world today. Some people find that taking Rolaids or Tums eases or eliminates their symptoms, while others need to take medication like Zantac or Prilosec. In severe cases, sufferers have to take prescription medication to keep their acid reflux under control. However, most people don't know that a simple over the counter remedy can control it without the nasty side effects of most prescription medications.

Peppermint is a wonderful gastric soother. It is believed to work by relaxing the smooth muscle in the digestive tract. This action also helps to alleviate bloating and, in some cases, abdominal pain. It can be bought as a high quality herbal tea or certain candies, such as Tic Tac's, can also be used because they use a relatively high concentration of peppermint essential oil.

Herbal tea, such as Celestial Seasonings, comes in a variety of blends and flavors. Their peppermint tea is wonderfully strong scented, indicating high oil levels. However, with tea, it has to be sweetened (preferably with honey) or it has a bitter after taste. Personally, I do not find mint tea to be very palatable without sweetener.

For many, though, carrying around a mug of tea all day isn't practical. If that is the case, peppermint flavored candies work well. It's always best to check the ingredients of the candies before buying them to see if peppermint essential oil is used and if so, in what quantity. If it is nearer to the top of the ingredients list, the essential oil is in higher concentration. By far the strongest mint, Altoids candies have a high concentration of peppermint oil. It can simultaneously freshen breath and aid in digestion.

While not all home remedies work for everyone, it can be a good thing to try a few out to see what works. Peppermint soothes the digestive tract and can help to alleviate acid reflux. Its oils are found in many common candies or breath mints, and can also aid with other ailments. If you are a sufferer of acid reflux, peppermint tea can prove to be a stimulating and enjoyable beginning to your day.
