Book collecting: Rare books

Book collecting: Rare books

There have been many books published which can help you distinguish between a rare book and a not so rare one. A person who researches the subject well will benefit a veteran collector or even someone who only collects as a hobby greatly. If you are only interested in books written by authors who have been dead for five hundred years then you need all the information available to you.

But what if you don't have a disposable income and you would like to own one or more books which are simply scarce? Your search doesn't need to be a boring, tedious quest. You can have fun and maybe even find other treasures in the process by checking under developed avenues.

Its Saturday afternoon and you don't want to sit around the house, but what do you do? There is always a Flea Market or a yard sale some where near you on a Saturday. I have found books in these places which I have paid as little as twenty-five cents. Most of these books are simply out of print and don't hold a great monetary value but are in pristine condition. Then comes the day when you find a copy of Shakespeare by Rev. Dodd, wow!

Many towns have a family auction service that have a weekly or monthly live auction. I have found several books worth collecting here and paid from two to five dollars for them. Books are usually auctioned in lots which means you will buy twenty or more books to acquire the one which caught your eye. Don't let this stop you because you can donate the ones which you don't want to your local library.

Many people donate the estate of their family to their church because they can help their raise money for the churches causes through the sale of the items in the value store which they run. Most of the rare and collectable books are kept in a case away from the bargain rack. A collectable copy of say, "Tom Sawyer" won't be a steal but if you look you can find a good deal.

Don't forget in the process that there are individuals who are looking for out of print books in original condition and are willing to pay more than you paid for them.
