How to decide if college is the right option

Deciding on whether to go to college or not is a decision that should not be taken lightly and should in fact be thought through very carefully before you jump into the next level of education.

College is not for everyone and should not be treated as an excuse to socialise and put off finding a job in the real world. College is hard and most people do not realise this, especially parents or any other adult who has not been to college. They assume that you will be spending your time drinking and socialising, ignoring the fact that you will be completing a large amount of time consuming and challenging assignments.

You must think carefully about what you want to do as a job for the rest of your life before you even think about applying for college. Think about what you see yourself being able to do or what you would like to do. If the job you are interested in does not specify that you need to go to college, then why do you need to go? Some jobs prefer employees to come straight from school into the job and like to train them up from there. There is always more than one way to get a job and not all of them insist on students from colleges.

College is good if you want to learn more about a subject area you are passionate about. If you feel that you will benefit from learning more about a subject and that it will help you be more employable in the future, then college should be a definite option for you. College is also brilliant for meeting new people and learning to live on your own and learning how to look after yourself.

Colleges do a variety of courses; each one is different depending on which college you go to. So if you do decide that you want to go to college there are a few other things you need to think about before you make your final decision.

You need to know exactly what you want to study it and then research all the courses in the subject that are available. Look at what sort of jobs you will be able to get at the end of college and see if there are any other ways of getting the same sort of job.

You need to look at the colleges themselves and see which one best suits your needs. You also need to consider whether you will be living at home or on site at the college, and look at accommodation.

You need to think very carefully about where you want to go and what is the best sort of course for you to do. Just remember to research everything thoroughly and ask your teachers at school if you have any problems. College isn't always the right choice for everyone but can be very beneficial if it is something you want to do. Do not be fooled into believing that you will only get a good job by going to college, as quite often it is not the case. Do what is right for you, and not what someone else wants you to do.

This is your decision and no one else has the right to make it for you. Think carefully and choose wisely.
