Aloha means Hello, Goodbye, and Love. Say Aloha to O'ahu and you'll love it!
The island of O'ahu boasts a wealth of visitor attractions and activities; this article will highlight some of the lesser-known, more affordable gems in the areas of food and family, with links to relevant websites included so that you may obtain information before visiting this beautiful and bustling island.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FOOD
In Hawai'i, the sharing of food can be a significant experience that connects people of diverse cultures, communities, and generations. Centuries of immigration by peoples of many nations, and the historical allure of the Hawaiian Islands are evident in the culinary landscape of O'ahu. Prominent landmarks include eateries serving food from Brazil, China, Cuba, and France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Laos, Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand, Switzerland, and many other countries. Local farmers' markets are another great source of home-grown produce; they are held on a regular basis in community parks and other easily accessible locations.
The premiere farmers' market is erected every Saturday morning near Diamond Head, in the parking lot of Kapi'olani Community College. In addition to buying produce or plants, you can buy baked goods, homemade jams and sauces, and prepared breakfasts from local eateries. You'll see nothing like this anywhere else in the world and it is a visual as well as culinary feast! Read more about it at http://www.kcc.hawaii.edu/obje ct/farmersmarket.html. Plan to visit the farmers' market before or after a visit to the Diamond Head Crater! The parking lot in which the market is staged is across from the entrance to the crater and city bus stops are nearby.
One of the most comprehensive guides to eateries on O'ahu is at http://www.hawaiidiner.com/dir ectory/index.php?island=1 where you can search by style of cuisine, neighborhood and type of restaurant. If you are staying in a Waikiki hotel, the most conveniently situated neighborhoods are Diamond Head, Kapahulu, Ala Moana, and McCully.
