The best martial art forms for self defense. Joe Lewis once said this in an article, " If one man who had a machine gun but didn't know how to use it, had to fight another who only had a revolver but knew how to use it. The man with the revolver would win." It depends on the man and not what they use.
There are many different forms of self defense and even the great Bruce Lee said that there is no one form that is better than the other. Purely because ithere was one form that was the best then there would only be one form of self defense. The martial arts are something to be expressed on an idividual basis for the man or woman.
For example a fighting form that trains you to fight from the ground may not be right for a small framed woman. If she was grabbed by a big strong man whose goal was to take her to the ground she may still be at a distinct disadvantage in strength and wieght.
The point I'm trying to make is that the best form of martial arts for self defence is individual. For example the above lady may have been better training in Wing Chun Kug fu which was desigined by a nun. Also because the timed have changed which was is better may be irrelevant.
Ninja trained to kill with one blow which in Fuedal Japan was necessary. However the police frown on leaving dead bodies around, it's far too messy.
The times have changed and if you don't want to be a ninja you don't have to. The best martial art for self defense is the one you want to study. The one you are interested in, the one that you enjoy. This is my opinion because if you ever have to defend yourself more than once or twice in your life you may be living wrong.
Avoid rather than hurt, Hurt rather than mame, Mame rather than kill, Kill rather than be killed. Is a quote from an old tv show called Kung fu and it shows how as a martial artist it's always better to be peaceful.
Individually speaking is the only way to solve this problem of which is the best form of self defense. A kicking style may not be the best form for an older person. Then tia chi may not be the best for a cop.
The thing to remember when you do have to defend yourself no matter what your form of martial arts is to keep your head and survive to come home safely. There is no reason to risk your life for $20 in your wallet. The best martial art is the one that allows you to do that.
Remember it's martial arts not ballroom dancing. Also remember when two tigers fight one is always killed the other is maimed. That's for all you tigers out there. Thank you
