"The Good Book"
The little girl was teased and taunted every day at school.
With hand-me-downs and worn out shoes she felt like such a fool.
She couldn't understand the reason she should be the one,
The other children picked upon and laughed at just for fun.
She told her mother how the children treated her at school.
Her mother felt so very sad and told her little girl,
"Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you".
"In time you'll come to understand, the meaning of this rule".
The little girl thought and thought about what mother said.
The next day when the children teased, she smiled and walked away.
As time went by, it mattered less and no longer made her cry.
Before too long, she started to see there were others just like her.
They didn't have the best of things and some had so much less.
She forgave the others and began to talk to them.
In time their teasing turned to smiles; tormentors turned to friends.
She's older now and still believes the words her mother said.
In fact, she reads the book her mother originally read it in.
The Good Book, as her mother called it, lies upon her stand.
And when the world is cruel and heartless, she takes it in her hand.
She slowly reads the pages praying, to better understand.
