Principles of online business ethics

Ethical behavior does not change simply because you conduct your business online as opposed to in person. Ethical behavior is still essential in order to preserve your reputation and business profits. Although is may be true that unethical behavior will cause you to acquire a quick profit, because your reputation will be destroyed in the process, the quick profit you make pails in comparison to the future profits that you will be giving up. Additionally, certain unethical behavior could give rise to a lawsuit and thus, not only is your reputation destroyed but you will lose the quick profit that you made either by way of a judgment against you and/or as a result of court costs.

Many people underestimate the importance of ethical behavior. Acting ethical will not only be in your best interest but will also be in the best interest of your customer or client. By engaging in ethical conduct, your customer or client will begin to trust you. Having your customers trust you can greatly increase your business because customers are more likely to recommend a business or person that they can trust. As such, you could get more referrals and thus, more profits.

It is important that you act ethically in all aspects of your business. This means that everything that you do with and for your business needs to be ethical. A subject where many business owners stray from the ethical path is advertising. Advertising is one of the most important parts of your business because this will be one of the primary ways that you bring customers in the door. As such, some business owners try to take shortcuts or try to make their product or service sound better than it is. It is important to note that there is nothing unethical about supporting your product and believing it is the best. However, when you start to make promises that you cannot realistically keep or you advertise that your product can do something that it cannot do, you have past the realm of "support" and have effortlessly crossed into the realm of "deceit."

The point is, you cannot be selectively ethical when it comes to your business, whether it is on the Internet or not. As such, if you remain ethical throughout your business dealings, not only will you be developing client or customer trust and a better reputation, you will also be building a large, highly respectable reputation for yourself and your business.
