She can't just put
a "help wanted"
sign in her window
like the manager
of a hardware store.
After, all, pride
is involved,
a matter of face.
She can't let them gloat,
the ones she passed
when she was strong,
always hurrying somewhere
in a shining car.
Stranded in the remains
of her life, she sits
behind the windows
of her eyes, hoping
someone will notice.

A "Help Wanted" sign by your side
But I had no money to toss to you
As you lay there frozen
Playdough on the floor
gum in my sisters hair
the doggies eating up my lunch
and mommies sitting on the stairs
As I sit beside
