Watching "CSI Miami" is kind of like eating a Sunkist orange and finding a shot of vodka in the juice.Just when you think it's just another cop show or CSI franchise with pretty people solving ugly crimes there's a jolt that keeps you riveted. It could come in any way, shape or form. This is what makes "CSI Miami" better than the original "CSI" or "CSI New York".
The show always has appetizing teasers. This makes you tune in on Monday nights no matter how tired you are. You want to see what happens to that busty con woman that Horatio is after. Or is that really Calleigh who gets shot on her wedding day? And is she marrying Delko? Finally?
The show starts with the crime being committed, then David Caruso goes into his "kabuki" stance - hands on hips, head tilted to the side as he delivers some pithy line about the newly erased. Cut to a blasting version of "We Won't Get Fooled Again" and cool, colorful shots of a young hip Miami. The story begins after that with a host of characters, all good looking and all well adjusted (despite what they've witnessed in their careers). What I like are all the twists and turns. Just when you thought Horatio is ready to do a samurai number on the con woman she turns out to be the mother of his long lost son, Kyle. She also turns out to be a former passion of his as well. That episode where we all though Calleigh and Erik tied the knot? The bride wasn't her but another equally pretty girl who was accidentally shot. The stripper/ hooker sitting in the front row was the target? Why? Because the groom turned out to be a cross dresser and his best man was going to do his best not to let the said stripper ruin his wedding day with some kinky pictures.
The cast is also as interesting as the plots. There's H's right hand man, Sergeant Tripp, (Played by Rex Linn who looks like he could be Fred Thompson's long lost son or love child). He provides Horatio's back up and is so serious you could swear he did a stint in the Miami Dade Police Department. Khandi Alexander plays Alex the coroner and she brings an incredible amount of sympathy and empathy to the position. She treats each victim with such loving care, that you have to look away at times because her performance is so touching. Emily Proctor's Calleigh is like a sparkler with a brain. She brings electricity to the lab with her quick mind and always easy smile (plus she wears the best lipstick colors on TV- ever) To act as her foils there's Eric and Wolfe , played respectively by Adam Rodriguez and Jonathan Togo. Erik has a very cool, Miami hip style but he also is the very thoughtful one, always going under the mantra "What would H do?" Wolfe is the brash one who thinks quick on his feet but is also very caring about his co workers. Eva La Rue adds more charm and give guts a new meaning as Natalia Boa Vista. Her family's real life experiences have been made into an alarming episode about missing girls.
All in all, "CSI Miami' is a fun show to watch. It shows a hipper , more urbane Miami, full of bright tropical colors and wild escapades. Should you watch it? Yes. Besides it's always fun to watch David Caruso do his "kabuki" stance three or four times during the hour.
