Poetry: Chain reactions

It took just one action that fateful night
the plunging of the sharp knife into the man's heart
and as the killer fled with wings on his feet
tearful eyes watched him .... knew one day they would get him

Many a months the eyes followed the killer
an eye for an eye was what they wanted
not for vain would have been that killing
unless a life for a life had been taken

The action that night had set up a chain reaction
until one day the killer was finally taken
and this time again in the darkness
another pair of eyes watched this murder

Innocents learning the art of killing
the fire of revenge fuel for their souls
A bloodthirsty chain reaction set up that night
blurring the fine line between victim and killer

This chain reaction had to be broken
so this time when fearful eyes a killing did watch
broken in spirit but hopeful for justice
A helpless hand reached out and held firm the hand of law

Maybe this time the chain would finally be broken.....
