It does the same thing that Amazon does for books. Like Noah's ark, Calendars.com tries to collect one of each species, promising "the best selection of calendars in the known universe." There's thousands and thousands of choices, more than could ever be offered in any offline store. And because they're online, they're even easier to browse.
The site allows searching on specific keywords, pinpointing a calendar you'll like almost immediately. Type in "Spiderman" and it pulls up eight different choices. The results come in wall size, as well as the thinner "locker wall size," and there's even a third alternative: "mini wall-size." Results can be narrowed to a specific size, year, or price range. And like any good merchant, they'll other related items.
To get you started, the site offers links for 53 different categories (including cats, dogs, movies, art...) One section even collects just the calendars that are 50% off. Another offers only religious calendars, and there's even calendars just for Christmas. But immediately below the categories is a similar section called "Popular Subjects." These include everything from "Islands and Beaches" and "Swimsuits" to "Marilyn Monroe" and "Elvis"! A helpful navigation bar at the top of the page identifies the five most popular categories. Apparently the site's shoppers are most interested in the following five things: Dogs, Art, Humor, Sports, and Models.
It's also fun to browse their Top 100 list to see what's become popular. (Right now, it's a Boston Red Sox World Series calendar, and a calendar counting down the end of President Bush's administration.) Scrolling down the front page finds more tantalizing suggestions - the top five scenic calendars, the top five animal calendars. If you're having trouble picking a calendar, the site offers a lot of suggestions.
A pop-up window displays the front and back cover, which usually includes all the photos inside. I've found some beautiful calendars this way, including "America's Back Roads" (after previewing its amazingly beautiful photographs of the wide-open farms and fields). With so many choices, it's easy to find a calendar that you'll love. Anything can happen in a new year- but at least you can start each month with a great-looking picture!
