Why it's better to give than receive

I love giving and I can only answer this question for myself.

I don't have an unlimited amount of funds to give, but I do love giving. Giving makes my heart feel good. I usually don't tell who I give to or who I help because I made a promise to a special friend of mind who passed away two years ago, that I would be an "Angel" to someone in my life, the way she was an Angel to me in my life when I really needed someone to help me.

This kind of giving is different than the giving we do at Christmas or Birthday's. I call that regular giving, but I like to help someone who doesn't have as much or who is going through a rough time in their life. I have things that I have given away to people who need them more than I. What I give is not always money, because as I said I do not have an over abundance in the money department. I do give my time when I can. Maybe it is a young mother with children who is alone and in need of someone to help get things in order in her home. Maybe she is just overwhelmed and needing a little help. Maybe it will be someone facing surgery and just needing a kind word. Sometimes someone just needs a little company to talk to. These are the things I can give.

To explain what I am talking about, I will give you a little background. My husband is on dialysis and we go three times a week. He is on the machine four hours each treatment. While he is on his machine, I know the nurses will look after him. This is my time to have for myself, sometimes I do take the time for myself, because, when we are at home I do not leave him. He has also had three strokes in the past year and needs me to care for him. There are other times I go help someone in need. This is my kind of giving.

It is so much better to give, because I can make someone's life a little better. The last thing I did was to help a young mother of three when she was moving. I helped her unpack boxes and get things put away. We got her children's clothes organized. I took her some groceries from my own grocery overflow at home. I like to share. I am going to clean out my freezer and drop some other things off for her. I gave her a gas card to help with her gas until she gets her check. These things are all small, but when you put everything together it helps. This is the kind of giving that truly makes my heart feel good. It makes me feel I have done something worth while for this young woman and her children. I also feel I am keeping a promise to someone I loved so much
