What would you do if you were granted the powers of the Almighty?
If you're Bruce Nolan, you endeavor to "right a few wrongs" you perceive in your selfish, entitled life.
Jim Carrey plays Bruce in this story that, while ripe for comedic misadventures, also has a lot of heart.
Bruce works for the local news station and longs to be an anchor man, so he is frustrated when he's delegated to the cutesy news stories.
His natural goofiness lends itself more to sound bites around gigantic cookies more than hard hitting headlines. Those are better reserved for the smug and arrogant Evan Baxter, convincingly portrayed by Steve Carell.
Our story kicks off when Bruce finds out that his nemesis Evan has been given that which Bruce covets most. This sparks a fit of epic proportions which dominoes into what results in Bruce's worst day ever, including a fight with his faithful and long suffering girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston). His response? He blames God for not doing his part in making Bruce happy. "The only one around here not doing his job is you!"
Bruce's righteous indignation results with a face to face meeting with none other than The Big Guy himself (Morgan Freeman). God has decided that he's tired of Bruce's bellyaching, and there's only way to give Bruce another perspective.
Give him the powers of God and let him see what it's like.
As one would expect, hilarity ensues. But what one doesn't expect is that it is done with respect and with incredible insight into the human character.
Tom Shadyac (Liar, Liar) once again harnesses Jim's manic genius to tell a story that reaches beyond broad comedy. It is a story that embraces the delicate relationship between God and his creation; where free will is uninterrupted and love is ultimately a choice.
Without being heavy handed in its message, Bruce Almighty challenges the viewer to ponder the kind of responsibility goes hand in hand with such awesome powers. With heart felt performances by both Carrey and Aniston, the movie proves to be a sweet romance in the end. It'll make you laugh, it'll touch your heart and ultimately demonstrate that sometimes the best we can hope for are unanswered prayers.
Only God knows.
