No. In Christianity, it is quality not quantity. We can't judge the success of any particular church the same way you evaluate a business, who's sole purpose is to attract more customers.
We have become a very entertainment oriented society, to the point where we sit back like King Herod and expect Jesus to amuse us. Otherwise, we threaten to leave the church the same way one might leave a movie theater if we don't like the film.
As a result, we have much apostasy occurring in the church, because of this expectation of the Christian faith to conform to us, rather than the other way around. Christianity is not a Democracy, either you accept the tenants of the faith, or leave. Failure to hold firm to this standpoint has lead to watering down the gospel, and abominations such as "so-called" Christian
speed-metal (hello STRYPER!), and apparently believing Jesus is God who died on the cross and is the only way to Heaven is so outdated.
Yes we want to bring as many souls to Christ as possible,and there is nothing wrong with mega churches,provided that they come to serve the Lord.These souls must abide by God's conditions, not demand that God abide by ours.
Yes, I could start a church where instead of hymns, we would have rap music. I could have scantily clad women dance and gyrate to the songs. Instead of sacramental bread and wine, we could drop acid and ecstasy. I'm sure I could attract a sizable amount of youth to my church.
But do the ends always justify the means?
Please keep Madison Avenue out of our churches, and let the power of the Holy Spirit in God's word speak for itself. Read Jesus parable of the seed and the sower. Not everyone will embrace Christ's teachings, not because they're wrong or outdated, but because their hearts are hardened.
Judge not the size of the congregation, but the size of devotion. Judge not the amount in the collection plate, but the amount of treasure in Heaven that each person holds.
Jesus had thousands of followers besides the twelve disciples, but when the darkest day in human history came, the torture and execution of the Lord, only a handful remained to the end.
it is these that truly define a church, not because of their size and number, but their devotion to God in times of prosperity and drought.
