The world is headed for disaster, but Al Gore will save us from almost certain peril! All right, perhaps that isn't the message of the film but there is certainly an element of intellectual smugness that permeates throughout the presentation. It's difficult to know what exactly to do with the movie, "An Inconvenient Truth". On the one hand, Gore may be on to something. At the same time, is he taking some pieces of data out of context and using them as a platform to promote himself? Here are a few thoughts on the film.

CONTENT

The movie is very interesting from an intellectual standpoint. If you are unaware of the content, it is essentially about the dangers and reality of global warming. Specifically, it is about the role that we have played in putting gases into our atmosphere, mostly through the overuse of fossil fuels. Al Gore walks us through various pieces of data, but most of it comes from his former professor. Gore warns us that if we continue on our current path, we may doom the earth to being flooded by melting ice caps. He also goes over the lack of effort on the part of the United States to avert this problem. Overall, the content is compelling, but he doesn't necessarily give two sides to the issue. In other words, you don't get a sense of how accepted the science is and whether or not there is general agreement amongst experts.

FORMAT

This isn't a riveting film from a cinematography standpoint. Most of it is Al Gore giving what is essentially a high-tech PowerPoint presentation. It also shows him going around the world and preaching the same message wherever he goes. While the presentation part was interesting, I didn't really need to see him delve into his personal life or talk about losing the presidential campaign. That part of the film seemed a bit superfluous.

I would definitely recommend this film to people but as with many documentaries, it should be taken with a "grain of salt" and watched with a critical eye. The film has a definitive slant, and it important that the watcher be able to distinguish this so that they do not automatically take every word of this film as gospel truth.
