to use it was remote, but I had to take the chance. While still several feet away, I swung my glance from mouse to cat and stopped in shock.

One lazy golden eye slitted open, calmly surveying the visitor on Pepe's back. His breathing never quickened, nor did one muscle move, but that yellow laser never left his prey. Confident that it was in no danger, the mouse moved down to snuggle against the cat's stomach, still busily smoothing and cleaning its fur.

As though in his sleep, Pepe pulled his front and hind legs closer to each other. For a brief second, the mouse seemed startled, but as the cat relaxed so did it. I stood swaying on one foot, fearing if I put down the other, the mouse would flee. My bad knee creaked a warning; it wouldn't hold me much longer.

Without further alert, the knee gave way, I crashed toward the floor and 'SNAP!'Pepe trapped the mouse in unforgiving paws. Squealing and struggling, the mouse turned to bite its captor, hoping to free itself. With a single snap, my old, useless cat relieved me of the gray specter and I barfed! The sight of blood wasn't the problem, but the sight of blood on my new carpet - ugh!

Click, click, click, out from the bedroom padded Mr. Scotty. Seeing his old pal had a new toy, he bounced over to check it out, receiving two open-clawed swats for his trouble.

The mouse was history and Pepe had reclaimed his place as top predator in his household. Life was good.
