Dogs, like humans and all living creatures on our planet, reproduce and give birth to offspring in order to continue the survival of their race. The pregnancy stage of a dog can be tedious and painful for her, but with the loving care of her owner she will get through it and have lots of healthy puppies in no time. Of course, what you should do for your dog if she is pregnant is another story, the first thing you need to know is, is she actually pregnant or not?
The obvious way to know if a dog is pregnant would be to logically see the change in her size, however, contrary to popular belief, this is not the best way, or in fact the smartest way either. This stage takes place further down the pregnancy and by then she may be too far along for you to provide the care she needs during this potentially stressful time.
The first ways to see if your dog is pregnant come in stages. These stages are not always together and are not always in a specific order, but she will experience all of these stages at some point during her pregnancy.
The first one that is quite simple to notice is the change in her temperament and mood. You will find that she may be sleeping more often and is not as inquisitive as she normally is. Even when you approach her to stroke or pet her she may not be very receptive and not move at all, despite her actually appreciating the attention, she is actually just feeling sorry for herself and may be feeling a bit down. Another way to tell this stage is by her nose. Her nose will usually be cold and wet, signalling a healthy dog, but during this stage it may become dry and warm, indicating that she is feeling ill. The best thing you can do during this stage is to simply offer her attention and spend time with her.
The next common stage is the leaking of milk from her teats. It is no mystery that dogs clean themselves by licking, but you will notice that your dog may start licking her teat area more often when going through stage one. This often goes hand-in-hand with stage one. When she is mopping and feeling sorry for herself, she will often clean the leakage herself. If you notice this stage then be sure to check if she is leaking milk.
Your dog will then have her occasional active days. She will be generally more active, sometimes hyperactive, and want to play and run around a lot. This is also very common, and it is very important that you keep an eye on her, particularly if you are a plant lover, as this will be the time when your dog will have a
