Women have played a variety of roles in Egyptian mythology, in my article I will take the time to list a number of Egyptian Goddesses as well as what they were most known for. I have also take the time to give a brief description of how that Goddess was depicted in Egyptian mythology.

Some of the roles that woman played in Egyptian mythology were beneficial, but there were a few Goddesses who played roles of destruction and violence as well. The Goddess AMMUT was known to devour the souls of those found unworthy to dwell in the afterlife. She was said to dwell in the Hall of Ma'at, in wait for the judgment of souls. Ammut was often depicted as having the head of a crocodile, the forequarters of a lion and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus.

The Goddess ANQUET was originally known as a water Goddess from Sudan. In later times during Egyptian mythology, the Goddess Anquet was known as the Goddess of the island of Sahal. The Goddess Anquet was often depicted as a woman who wore a crown of ostrich feathers.

In later times during Egyptian mythology, the Goddess Anquet was known as the Goddess of lust. She was often called the "Lady of Sahal" and her sacred animal was said to be the gazelle.

The Goddess BASTET was known for her role as Goddess of fire, cats, the home and pregnant women. She was also called the "Lady of the East". Bastet was often depicted as a women with the head of a domesticated cat. However up until about 1000BC she was depicted as a lioness, she was also known to be the daughter of Re(pronounced Ra), the sun God.

Bastet was known as docile and gentle in her role as a protector of the home and pregnant women, however she was also known as aggressive and vicious in the accounts of battles fought by the pharaoh.

The Goddess BAT is another women who has played a large role in Egyptian mythology, she is known as a very ancient Goddess. There has been evidence of Bat which dates back to the late pre-Dynastic period in Egyptian mythology.
