Although jogging is an activity enjoyed by many it is actually one of the more dangerous forms of exercise available. Most of this danger is due to the high-impact nature of the sport. Jogging, particularly jogging on concrete, can result in painful shin splints and inflamed knee joints. This pain can be intense and debilitating, often stopping a person from continuing their routine long enough to enjoy the many health benefits of exercise. Jogging on concrete also carries a high risk of injuries caused by falling in in wet, or icy conditions.
Walking is a considerably less risky form of exercise and, like jogging, the only equipment required is proper socks and shoes. I prefer walking over jogging and here just some of the reasons why:
1. When you are walking for fitness you can easily enjoy a conversation with the person beside you.
2. When you are walking for fitness you can enjoy nature both inside and outside of the city. It can be difficult to navigate many hiking trails while jogging without spraining an ankle or taking a serious fall.
3. Walking is easier on the joints because it is a low-impact exercise.
As stated earlier, jogging is a high-impact sport and the stress on your joints is significant.
4. If you are a woman, walking can be a more pleasant experience than jogging simply because your chest area doesn't experience the bouncing effects of gravity quite as much.
5.You can join walking groups at the mall.
6.Your shoes and socks won't wear out nearly as quickly.
7.If the sun is in your eyes, it's easier to shield your face with your hands if you're walking.
And on the lighter side:
8.You'll spend less on deodorant because you sweat less when you're walking
9.If you wear your hair in a ponytail, it won't swish in you face when you're walking.
And lastly,
10.You will never have someone ask you if there is someone chasing you and why.
Obviously I far prefer walking to jogging but the reality is that most people would like to get a good cardiovascular workout when they exercise and unless you are walking uphill, walking may not give your heart the workout you're looking for.
So, how can a moderately fit person who lives in a flat suburb get a good,low-impact cardiovascular workout that's easy on their joints? Swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise. Low-impact aerobics classes are also a good choice. Biking is also an excellent, low impact form of exercise. Many gyms offer "spin classes" where you get an intense, instructor-led workout on a stationary bike. This is a great way to get in shape before you hit the outdoor bike trails or even just a year-round, low-impact workout. Lastly, you can alternate walking with jogging at your local indoor track. The high-tech cushioned floors on these tracks will help keep your workout relatively low-impact.
It's important to find a workout that works well for you and is actually enhancing your life. If you find that your negatives are outweighing your positives, it's time to try something different. Also, it's always a good idea to consult your doctor before starting a new workout routine particularly if you have been inactive for a period of time.
