The Choice of Do
The mind tends to boggle just a bit
When our collective consciences
Attempt to reconcile two converging
Issues that, when studied independently,
Loudly scream injustice.
Still, a choice must be made.
As isolated events we see inhumanity
In both choices,
But converged we look to the lesser
Of the Purest evil,
Or mitigated evil.
We choose our disdain,
The mitigating rationale,
Like we select a Christmas gift
For a distant relative.
We agonize over cost,
Size, or color,
Or why we must make a selection at all
For someone failing
Reciprocation and gratitude.
But we package it nicely,
Present it kindly, and hope
The moment passes. Quickly.
We made the best choice
Under the worst of conditions.
We wait for criticism,
Apologetically and timidly,
From those who see things
Differently, not better, differently.
But those who share
Their overt opinions
Perceive their differences
As better, more thoughtful,
And form theoretical judgments
Based upon effects manifested
Rather than causes justified.
Critics seek the sinister,
The heavy-handed agendas,
Connecting the ridiculously unrelated
As though the reluctant choice
Justified ground zero
Long after-the-fact.
