Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Symptoms and treatment

Irritable Bowl Syndrome, also known as IBS, affects your bowels and causes pain in your abdomen. It is difficult to diagnose because most of the side effects can be caused by other illnesses such as flu or general bowel problems. It is a horrible condition to be inflicted with, but can be controlled by adjusting your diet and through exercise to help reduce the effect of it on your life.

The main symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome are lower abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, change in bowel habits and bloating after meals. Some other symptoms you may experience are rapid digestion of food, headaches, and anxiety. Some suffers also pass wind more often, feel fatigue and nauseous.

In some patients, irritable bowel syndrome can develop after an infection which causes two or more of the following symptoms; fever, diarrhoea, vomiting or changes in faeces.

When irritable bowel syndrome is being diagnosed there is no real procedure to test for it in a patient. The cause of irritable bowel syndrome is unclear which makes it hard for the doctors to diagnose a patient; instead they have to exclude other conditions which produce similar symptoms to irritable bowel syndrome and diagnose the problem from there.

Irritable bowel syndrome can be treated by first discovering the cause for the condition. The main causes of irritable bowl syndrome are stress, depression, smoking in exession and drinking alcohol in exession.

By identifying the cause, you can reduce it to help stop aggravating your digestive system. For example if stress is the cause of irritable bowel syndrome for you, then if you make sure you cut down on the things which make you stressed it should help ease the pain. Finding something to do to release stress also helps such as drawing or writing. If alcohol is the source of the problem, then cut down on your intake and it should help stop the effects of irritable bowel syndrome.

There is no real cure for irritable bowel syndrome, but you can lessen the pain by taking indigestion medication such as Gaviscon. Peppermint oil capsules are good for settling a stomach and are taken before you eat. Ginger naturally settles a stomach if you feel nauseous and is good to take after a meal or when you feel the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome setting in. Natural, probiotic yoghurt is really good for your stomach as it contains bacteria that help your intestines to digest the food and settles them. Make sure that you get probiotic yoghurt otherwise it
