Though there are disagreements about "global climate change" and "global warming," developing countries must decide how developing their countries will affect them now and in the future. They must develop in a way that can sustain them for all future generations. Included within the question of how are they preparing to adapt is the question how should we help them to adapt to global climate change and the other world problems that must be addressed before development plans are set.
How can they know who to believe and how to proceed, since there are scientists on both sides of the issues? These questions are not for them alone, but also for international entities and communities that are being approached to invest in the underdeveloped nations. It helps to realize that the same things that are causing what the scientists call global warming, are causing other problems that must be addressed, problems that can be avoided.
There is no disputing the evidence that many things we created for convenience have caused us to alter our lifestyle and created problems of their own. The course of action for developing countries is a question developed countries must also consider for their people. It profits no one to make a country more modern only to be polluted off the face of the earth faster.
To get a true perspective and determine how to adapt to present problems and future possibilities, it helps to understand where we were and how we got where we are now. The goal of life was not to be employment; the goal was retirement in a garden paradise with abundance of beauty and fresh foods. If we headed for that development level now, any nation would quickly attain it.
If we go to the retirement garden model for development, terms such as global warming, greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide emissions, and environmental policy would not create confusion, divisions and new laws, bondage and fears for our future. There would be no pollution, energy crisis, waste management problems, hazardous waste disposal systems, nuclear energy with its unique problems, or health insurance needs. Families would stay close together and be true social security for all age groups.
Now consider the nations in all phases of development as they consider how to adapt for their future and prepare for the impacts of global climate change. Oil is needed for industry and automobiles that many say cause the most threat to the future,.including global warming.
IF there were no adverse affects of pollution
