How to learn HTML

At first site HTML may seem complex and overwhelming, but taken one step at a time most people find it very easy and quite intuitive. So don't chicken out a first glance, take a closer look. Learning HTML is well worth the time it takes, and if you learn even a little, you'll find it useful. You can dip in again later, when you need more.

- 1. Get a web-space

You can use a book, or you can use a web-site. You can use a tutorial, or you can use a friend, but whatever you use, you'll only learn HTML when you build a web-page. So type "free home page," or "free website" into a search engine and sign up for a free website someplace on the web. I have used freeservers.com and awardspace.com but there are lots of places that you can find free hosting for your HTML learning project.

- 2. Choose a topic
Now that you have a place to grow, you will need to choose a topic. It doesn't have to be earth-shaking. It's not a life-long commitment. It's just an opportunity to practice. Write a couple of paragraphs and select a couple of graphics to start with and you'll be ready to begin.

- 3. Select a reference
Maybe you've already selected a tutorial or reference, but if you haven't I suggest you look at:

"http://www.w3schools.com/h tml/"

It is by far the best source of HTML information on the web. I provides basic information as well as detailed references. There are pages where you can try out different things and see the results immediately on the same page.

There are also articles on Helium such as "A Beginners Guide to HTML" that can get you started. Likewise there are text books available; and you may even have friends that will help you get started in exchange for a decent meal, a car wash, or a gift card for Outback or Fandango. Whether you go it alone or get help, the important thing is to get started.

- 4. Get the print on the page
No need to learn it all before you start building your web pages. The best way to learn is one piece at at time. The beauty of web presentation is that you can change it as you go. The first thing to do is get the content on the page, then you'll learn to format it, arrange it, color it, size it, and spice it up with graphics, links, and widgets!

- 5. Links
Linking your pages to other sites, and to other pages on your own site takes advantage of the best that the web has to offer. Spend some time looking for other helpful information about your topic, and then add a few links to your practice page. Linking to an email address will also be important
