Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) & heartburn: Symptoms and treatment

your meals. Eat smaller portions more frequently and avoid hot, searing soup or beverages. Keep away from foods that are largely acidic such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and barbequed meat. Try not to eat hot, crusty breads and steer clear of alcohol, strong coffee, rich foods and spices.

Although you may have to lose weight to help the body rid itself of reflux, the best treatment is to eat regularly. If you do not you could further add to the discomfort. So make sure you eat small amounts of food throughout the day.

Ensure that you never eat shortly before falling asleep. This exacerbates reflux. Night time is the worst for sufferers of GERD.

By raising your mattress at the head, treatment of the malady is helped. Place cushions or blankets underneath so that your head is tilted upright. It is better to raise the entire bedstead so that it slants down from the head. Sleep up on cushions and not flat.

Drink water frequently and try not to stress as this will aggravate the condition.

The use of antacid remedies available at your supermarket will alleviate the symptoms temporarily but not treat the reflux. Left untreated the constant inflammation can lead to much more severe illness including cancer of the esophagus. It follows that you must obtain medical help if you are suffering from reflux.

Once the doctor has placed you on medication, the dosage will need to be monitored and changed if ineffective. Some reflux tablets cause side effects such as headaches. There are a number of generic alternatives and you may have to try several until you find one that is suitable.

With careful treatment and medication you can live normally.
