Jonas Salk was Jewish. He discovered the Salk vaccine for polio prevention. Albert Einstein we all know about.Kirk Douglas is a fine movie star and so is and was Paul Newman. Alan King and Henny Youngman made everyone smile with their humor. Roberta Peters and Beverly Sills made our ears shine with their melodic voices. Henry Kissinger was a fine mediator and secretary of state of the USA. Leonard Bernstein, Robert Merrill, Richard Tucker and Jan Peerce all were delightful voices in the opera world and one a conductor.
Jack Benny, Woody Allen. Gilda Radner, Molly Picon, Bette Midler, Al Jolson,Billy Crystal,Steve Lawrence, Jerry Stiller, Ben Stiller, and many more are entertainers supreme. Moguls of movie studios brought the movies into our hearts especially when there was no television in most homes until about nineteen forty-eight or so.Many were Jewish who ran the studios and discovered new stars weekly and made them popular names on the screen.
We relied on movies for our news of the week and our night out to watch a darkened screen with real curtain draperies that pulled back from being closed to an open and large screen. We sat in the dark and watched our beloved actors sparkle on the big screen. Now many of us have big screen televisions that are almost as big as the movies we saw then.
Morey Amsterdam made us smile with his antics on the Mary Tyler Moore show and of course the one and only Jerry Seinfeld.
Who can dispute how much Jewish people have contributed to this country throughout the years. We have been bombarded with anti-semitism and yet we still go forward and accomplish. We do not ask for too much acclaim, just the knowledge we have been successful. We do not ask for public acknowledgment daily, we only want to be known for what we have attempted and hope we have helped the community at large.
Through the years Jewish moms and dads have encouraged their children to study hard, go to college and be successful. Often times, we the parents may not have had that opportunity because our own parents did not have the resources to send us on to further education. So we want our own kids to go way beyond our dreams.
Jewish hope has given us these famous comedians, opera stars, movie stars, scientists and they have excelled in every field. I could go on and on with dozens of other names. So we have not failed in giving this country a source of Jewish intellect and talent.
