Poetry: Help wanted

Often as we gaze across
a sea of many faces
these faces are like open books
depicting faraway places

The lines across their faces
map the contours of their life
Tales of loss,of love,of sadness
Tales of victory and of strife

Each individual in this world
bears the burden of their cross
this cross transcends all prejudices
of color,creed or cost

The picture of a beaten wife,
the smiling aged war veteran
an impoverished,crying,hungry child
that the world outsides forgotten

These images form a story on
your plasma TV screen
With captions like "Help Wanted"
donations wash the conscience clean

Yet some of us, choose to ignore these signs
choose not to give at all
Charity begins at home we say
our donations are too small

I've seen a man give freely
dig deep inside his soul
without a word,without a thought
emptied his pockets,he gave all

To me,the silent onlooker
I was humbled by this sight
of a poor man in tattered clothes
with no home to go to,that night

It seems that many of us should carry
these "Help Wanted" signs
and hope that God would donate to us
some open hearts and minds.
