Why Atheism is wrong

and indeed, to all that is material. (G. Gaylord Simpson, Paleontologist, Professor of Zoology at Columbia Univ., and influential evolutionary scientist, The Meaning of Evolution, pg. 334)

Amoral : (a) neither moral nor immoral; (b) outside the bounds of that to which moral judgments apply (Websters Third New International Dictionary)

The world of the animal is amoral. The world of the animal is outside the bounds of that to which moral judgments apply. When a lion pulls down, and kills a zebra, the lion has not done anything moral nor immoral, that is simply the way nature operates, the way things are. If it is true that we are part of the animal world, there is no difference between a lion killing a zebra, a person killing a zebra, and a person killing a person. Why is one viewed as the way nature operates, and one suddenly labeled immoral? The intellectually honest atheist, (there must be one somewhere), knows that morality is just a word that an individual or society assigns to behavior that it subjectively has decided it prefers. For the atheist there is no real meaning to the word morality. It means whatever the individual or the particular society wants it to mean.

Morality is the custom of one's country and the current feelings of one's peers. Cannibalism is moral in a cannibalistic country (Samuel Butler, The Notebooks of Samuel Butler,pg. 523)

Morality for the atheist, is just another way of saying, Different Strokes for Different Folks. No particular society is right, and no particular society is wrong. Each society establishes, maintains, and modifies their values to suit their own needs. An atheist can say that a certain system of behavior does not appeal to his taste, that he doesn't like it, but not that it is immoral. A more precise way of putting it might be, that what the atheist really means when he labels something as immoral, is that he subjectively doesn't like it.

No Grand Divine Plan, Only Cosmic Chaos

I present you with another excerpt from Hitchens' lecture at Sewanee Univ., The Moral Necessity of Atheism:

If it was true that we are all part of a grand divine design What would it actually mean?....It would mean a regime of permanent supervision and surveillance over our lives and personalities an inescapable authoritarian control. It would be like living in a celestial North Korea - why would you want such a thing to be true?! What a hideous realm of permanent total inescapable unfreedom is being proposed
