The Amoral World of Atheism
Is it possible for the atheist to have a meaningful system of morality?
.. religion is a human construct that does not correspond to any metaphysical reality. (Professor Julian Baggini- Atheism- A Short Introduction, pg.29)
Let's assume for argument's sake that the above cited assertion from Professor Baginni is true. How then would we view religion? Baggini's obvious point is that if religion is just a human construct - with no connection to a higher reality - why should anyone take it seriously? It is just another product of the creative human imagination, and has no intrinsic value or meaning at all. It corresponds to nothing except to the imaginative energy, and the subjective reality inside the head of its human creator.
Baggini spends a lot of time in his book trying to convince us that the atheist can actually have a meaningful set of moral values.
However, many people think that atheists believe there is no God, and no morality. As we shall see later, there is nothing to stop atheists from believing in morality, a meaning for life, or human goodness (pg. 3)
From his own statement, cited at the beginning of this chapter, we see how completely disconnected from reality his position actually is. Not only are all atheistic systems nothing more than human constructs that do not correspond to any metaphysical (beyond the physical) reality, the atheist explicitly denies there is such a thing as a metaphysical reality. The only things that exist are atoms, molecules, and chemicals. (Mr. Baggini is living in a material world, and he is a material boy!) If, as atheists claim, religion is a human construct that has artificially created concepts such as God, revelation, and commandment, then atheistic ideologies are human constructs that have artificially created concepts such as values, meaning, and morality.
In other words, a system of values based on an atheistic world view, is in essence another form of religion whose source is nothing more significant than the imagination of its human creator.
The Two Legged Darwinian Animal Farm
One obvious and inescapable implication of atheism is this: We are qualitatively no different than any other animal:
Man is the result of a purposeless and materialistic process that did not have a human in mind. He was not planned. He is a state of matter, a form of life, a sort of animal, and a species in the order of primates, akin nearly or remotely, to all life,
