Some won't consider this an accessory, but those who have made the leap to buy a digital SLR should invest in the most vital thing that will improve their nighttime and indoor photography - a dedicated flash.
If you don't know what a dedicated flash is, just picture the large flash on top of the paparazzi's cameras as they take pictures on the red carpet. It attaches to your hot-shoe, which is the metal clip on the top of your SLR.
But why spend the money to replace something you already have on your camera? Sure, all SLRs come with a built-in, pop-up flash. It does a great job, too. It's more powerful than a flash from a point-and-shoot camera, so it can light up more space.
Here are four key areas that make it a worthwhile investment:
1. Virtually eliminates red-eye - the main reason why red-eye happens is because the camera's built-in flash is next to the lens, which allows the flash to bounce off of the blood vessels in the eye and reflect back into the lens. A dedicated flash puts the light several inches above the lens, which virtually eliminates red-eye.
2. The ability to bounce the flash - angling the flash towards the wall or ceiling bounce it off of walls or the ceiling will create a softer light that seems to wrap itself around your subject.
3. Larger flash bulb - the more surface area your flash has, the softer the shadows will be behind your subjects. This will greatly eliminate the unsightly, harsh shadows that can stand out in your people photos.
4. More power - a dedicated flash is not only much more powerful, but it has its own batteries and won't drain the one in your camera.
Dedicated flashes used to be expensive, but recently they have dropped significantly in price. While it is usually best to buy a flash from the same manufacturer as your SLR, thanks to companies like Metz, Sunpak, and Sigma, you can buy a very good flash for a little over $100.
If you find yourself taking a lot of shots indoors, whether of the family, holidays, parties, or whatever, strongly consider buying a dedicated flash. I love mine, and you will too.
