Poetry: Heart attack

Heart Attack

I got home today
hung up my coat
looked at the calendar
moving by rote.

There I saw the date
looked forward a week
realized the anniversary
upon me did creep.

Two years! I thought
marveling deep
I thought of the day
that you'd made me weep.

A day that had come
like most often do
with the sun in the sky
waking up with you.

I saw your sweet face
made lovely by life
our children all grown
but you still my wife.

Slow breakfast of toast
and eggs piping hot
they fell to the floor
along with their pot.

You reached for your chair
I stood in alarm
your face in such pain
something doing you harm.

You sat and I asked
What is it, what's wrong?
your right hand held tight
to your upper left arm.

In a moment I knew
but denied what was clear
I dashed to the phone
my heart filled with fear.

Hurry! I shouted
and turning to you
held out my hand
saw your eyes so blue.

To the kitchen floor
I eased your still form
your hand held me tight
your body so warm.

That day two years gone
I didn't expect fate
heart attack came quick
and they were too late.

Anniversary, I thought
my heart cracking wide.
Alone there I stood
and closed my eyes.

    I am so cold

    This heart of mine,
    it beats, beats, beats,
    But my body is tired
    and I

    A small flame
