Here's a few to whet some appetites:
Amelie - Audrey Tautau (probably now better known for role as Sophie Neveu in the Da Vinci Code) plays an extremely likeable protagonist who finds herself at a crossroads in her life. It is impeccably filmed with vibrant colors and equally colorful characters, with a storyline that celebrates life as it follows the title character through her little quests to help the human race. The film was nominated for 5 Oscars (including Best Cinematography and Best Writing) and was the recipient of nearly 50 other awards worldwide. To add to the eye candy, it is filmed in the backdrop of Montmartre in Paris. Oh yeah, did I mention it is in French with English subtitles? Don't worry about that. The movie is still easy to enjoy even if you have to read the words across the bottom of the screen.
Spirited Away - I feel compelled to place a Miyazaki film in here and while I am also a huge fan of Princess Mononoke, which is his film about a war between two groups over sacred land, his Spirited Away is the movie I first saw that sold me on his talents as a writer and animator. The story and artwork is beautifully rendered, and depicts a girl who manages to grow up in a very unusual world. It takes a page out of Alice in Wonderland but is in some ways much more fantastic and otherworldly, while at the same time depicting the reactions of a little girl to a foreign place in very realistic ways.
O Brother Where Art Thou? - You don't have to read The Odyssey to appreciate this hilarious take on it by the Coen brothers, but it doesn't hurt. This is probably one of the most quotable comedies to come out in a long time, most of the one-liners coming from the very talented George Clooney (and yes, believe it or not, he is fully capable of some knee-slapping silliness in addition to witty dialogue). The music is something to soak in, influenced by country and bluegrass. I thought so, and I'm not even a country music fan. Hollywood dared to embrace something new and different with this one, and it is great fun.
