His book Aromatherapie' was published in 1937 and Gattefosse is considered one of the fathers of modern Aromatherapy. His book sparked new interest in the practice and the beginning of Aromatherapy as we see it practiced today.
Of course Gattefosse couldn't have imagined that the word Aromatherapy would be used to sell just about anything with a fragrance. Candles, laundry soap, and household air fresheners all claim Aromatherapy benefits. As a result, what many Americans know about Aromatherapy has been gleaned from advertisements. Calling something Aromatherapy certainly doesn't make it so. Learn to check ingredient labels, if fragrance or fragrance oil is listed then the word Aromatherapy' on the label is strictly marketing. As a rule, the more mass produced a product is, the less likely it is to contain a significant amount of essential oils, and not likely at all that those oils will be of good quality.
How Aromatherapy Works
Aromatherapy works in two basic ways, through application on the skin and/ or inhalation. Inhalation generally affects the mental and emotional state, while absorption into the skin and bloodstream will benefit the skin, muscles, blood, lymph fluid and internal organs. Here's the cool part. Say your goal is to heal your dry skin using Lavender. Inhale all you want, nothing is going to happen to your skin, except maybe you'll get more beauty sleep. However if you apply lavender to the skin you also get to inhale it and enjoy the calming, stress reducing, benefits of the oil. It is this dual action of essential oils that makes Aromatherapy so amazing. You can address your mind, body, and spirit simultaneously and without extra effort. Keywords: Without Extra Effort. Essential oils can contain hundreds of chemical constituents. Each constituent creates a different chemical reaction that triggers physiological and psychological responses.
