Great history projects for elementary school students

History is very important. How will we prepare for the future without understanding our past. History could be made fun. Heres some suggestions from me.
A big project could be by splitting the class into smaller groups and then giving each group a particular time in history form any part of the world. Then each group has to research that time period. Dress in the fashion from that time including any jewelery and hair styles. Then each group must make items from that time and set up a market stall. Then all the stalls could be set up in one room so it looks like one big market scene. Not only would each child learn about one time in history but by pretending to buy objects from other stalls they would learn about other times in history. Children love to dress up and act so it gives them the chance to research and create outfits from a period a long time ago.

Egypt: Re create a tomb and make all the objects that go in it.
Greece: Write and perform a typical Greek play, with costumes.
Roman: Re create a senate and have discussions. Or make mosaics based on archaeological findings.
Make toys that children in the Victorian and Georgian times used to play with.
If it is fun then they could be learning without knowing it.

I'm Welsh so history lessons in my local schools would be based on Welsh and British history.
For the Celts they could maybe to a massive project and re create a Bronze age Celtic round House. Then the children would gain first hand experience of life has it was in the Bronze age. As it had mud walls the children would enjoy getting messy in school hours. Also make shields to decorate the interior of the building. When it was finished they could dress up in their families tartan (if they have one) or borrow from another families. Mine is the McLeod of Harris, which is an ancient tartan.
Also they used to sit around a big fire and tell stories about warriors and the Gods. As fire would be a safety issue you could pretend. Or even re create the stories and have competitions to make your own up.

The more fun you make it the more the children will wont to learn.
