The question of the existence of God as a true being can be answered with a resounding "yes." However, as a purely spiritual being, God's existence cannot be proven by physical senses such as sight, hearing or touch. God's existence must be accepted by faith.
This faith is not blind. The writer of the book of Hebrews states, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (11:1) Faith in the existence of God is a conviction born of evidence, evidence found in the physical creation around us and evidence found in the fulfilled prophecy and consistent teachings of the Bible.
"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse...." (Romans 1:20) When you look at a beautiful painting or sculpture, you instantly recognize-and praise-the talents of the artist. There is no question that the work before you was an accident of chance. Yet, that object is a shadow that represents a reality even more complex. If the simpler representation took intelligence and will to design, logic dictates the reality requires more of the same. There is a thoughtful precision evident in everything from the construction of a single cell, to the orbit of the planets around the sun.
The very existence of the universe is a testament to the existence of something greater. The second law of thermodynamics states unequivocally that condense energy diffuses. In other words, things break down. Something does not come from nothing, or from something smaller than itself.
From a philosophical stance, all existence can be broken down into two categories: mind or matter. That fact that something does not come from nothing means that one of these two must always have been in existence. Either matter, which is unthinking, created mind, or mind, which is thinking, created matter. Man's mind is mortal, and no one would argue that it has attained the ability to create (or replicate, or even understand) the universe of matter around us. Thus, a greater, eternal mind was responsible.
The Bible is all the irrefutable proof needed for the existence of God. Only divine authorship could explain:
- the amazing unity of thought between 40 men of different backgrounds (fishermen, kings, lawyers and shepherds) over 1,600 years
- the incredible availability and preservation of source texts
- the historical, scientific and prophetic accuracy
Whether you want to base it on holy scriptures, scientific laws, philosophical debates, or the faith of millions who believe there is a greater power, it is clear that God is a true being. No other explanation can logically account for all the questions of life and puzzles of the universe.
