Reflections: Appreciating the little things in life

moment of silliness provided me enormous relief. Almost as enormous was my enormous sense of gratitude. Sometimes it's a hard fight to leave your worries behind you. Show me a man who laughs hard, I'll show you a man who worries harder. After smoking another bowl, I put foot to pedal and continued along my merry way.

I saw many signs like that one. For instance, that same night I saw one for Hungry Mother State Park and the next day I saw one for Toad Suck Park and another for Frozen Head State Park. You have to wonder what events transpired to bring these names into being. When you think on that you can't help but love the lives you pass through in the pitch of night.

(N.B.: Smoking (or taking pictures) while driving is extremely dangerous and should not be engaged in ever; even if you happen to be an especially good driver, like myself. And I am a good driver. But as an honest man, a writer, it behooves me to reveal that even when sober I sometimes have flighty moments. Earlier that same day, a friend of mine watching me leave Alexandria, Va., later wrote, saying: 'Heard that you were back in the States. How was the great adventure? By the by, Nathan and I caught sight of your car as we were leaving Johanna's when you visited there, and saw you run a read light and very narrowly escape missing no less than two exits. I hope that the rest of your drive to and from California went a little smoother.' I will add, however, that I drove 6,000 miles without mishap.)
