Anxiety issues among college students

Being a student myself, I immediately thought about assignments when I thought of anxiety issues among students. We all have issues individually; things which make us worry or panic about what we are doing. Then as students we have the collective causes of anxiety such as assignment deadlines, confusion over assignments or lectures, social issues with friends and partners, and then the extra anxiety of being away from home and unable to talk to our families enough.

Students always have a lot more to panic about and worry over than most people realise. There is a lot of pressure to do well at University, which comes from lecturers who want us to succeed and parents who want us to do well so that we can get a better job. The first year of University is always especially stressful for a student as it involves learning new things at a higher level than they are used to and also in a different way to what they are used to. They also have to adjust to living away from home, which is great for some students but horrible for others. Homesick students definitely suffer from anxiety as they miss the feeling of belonging to a family, and unless they find supportive friends, this feeling of being alone and without comfort can be very horrible and lead to depression.

Assignments are the biggest cause of anxiety in students, especially those in the higher years, as the more you progress the harder it gets to do the work. The workload in the second year of University is especially high and most students become very stressed during that year. The first year is easier on the mind and does not place much stress on the students in regards to work as the lecturers know you have to deal with a load of other issues such as settling in, making friends and coping with living away from home. In the second year however, it is assumed that you have settled in now and it is at that point that they throw the more challenging assignments at you.

Assignment deadlines cause a great amount of stress for students. Some students complete the assignments gradually over the semester, some start in the last couple of weeks and some leave it right until the last minute. Nearly every student holds back on handing in work until the last moment, just to make sure that they got things right. Deadlines are especially stressful for those who neglected the work earlier on in the semester as they have to spend a lot of time catching up. A usual trend is to stay awake all night and finish the assignment in a few days. This only makes the stress worse and does not help the student in question.

The key to avoiding anxiety as a student is to identify what causes the stress and work out how to minimise it. Taking breaks is ideal when working on assignments, as this helps you to clear your brain and relax for a while before heading back to continue with the problem solving. Remaining calm and finding ways to reduce stress is the best way to solve anxiety problems.
