Why do people get tattoos if they hurt?

As a heavily tattooed, and pierced person chances are you have heard "Why did you get that?", and "Didn't that hurt?" at least several times a week when your tattoos are visible. I myself, generally come back with the retort "Why do we do anything?". I personally can't tell you how many times I have been stopped from strangers due to my extensive tattoo work. Most people tend to be fairly polite with their questions, or stares however it is important to know that before getting your first tattoo, that it will change your life dramatically. I myself am a mother, and am out and about with my daughter several times a week to shop. Although I rarely get looks in the winter time, because most of my tattoos are covered with a bulky winters coat, in the spring and summer weather I will get several questions about how she will have to deal with a 'tattooed mom'. So quite honestly, the initial pain of a tattoo is meaningless, if you can't handle the onlookers and often times rude comments from strangers. While most of the time, a person who has several tattoos they can tolerate pain fairly well. However, there are a small hand-full that can't sit still for the life of them during the painful process of obtaining a tattoo.

But, why do they get them if they hurt both physically, and mentally? Well, unfortunately there is no simple answer to this question. Every person seems to have their own reasoning for obtaining ink. While I myself get inked for the artwork, memories, as well as enjoying the thrill of the pain. Others do it simply because they are in mourning of a loved one, they want to follow a popular trend, or they simply are tattoo junkies. Almost every reason you can think of for getting a tattoo, has been felt by someone, somewhere at one point in time. So the sky is the limit with why they would get a tattoo if they hurt.

While this seems to be a good question, until you have gained the badge of a tattoo you will never truly understand the awe inspiring process. Quite the contrary, most people with un-adorned skin will never quite know why people state that tattoos are addictive. However, chances are that if they do decide to mar their perfect skin, they will eventually find solace in another, and then another tattoo for memorializing this place in their life.

Even though people state that tattoos hurt, it really depends on your pain threshold. If you can't stand the sight of needles, or tolerate the pain from a simple poke from an injection needle at the doctors. You should steer clear from the tattooing process all together, as you would probably squirm and either be left with half of a tattoo, or a very upset tattoo artist. Either way, if you want to obtain a tattoo make sure that you can handle the pain for a minimum of one hour prior to sitting in that tattooists chair. Remember, that there is nothing that should be used to numb the tattooing process, as they can cause adverse effects on both the tattoo and the person getting said tattoo.
