Health benefits of laughing

A laugh a day....this should take the place of an apple a day in my opinion. When people laugh, not just a chuckle or a smirk, but a hearty meaningful guffaw so many actions are occurring in our bodies that are lending to better health for us. Picture in your mind's eye small children at play. It seems as if they haven't a care in the world. They run, jump, play and yes, laugh. Just picturing this brings a smile to my face.

When we laugh we reduce stress, improve blood flow, calm nerves, enhances our immune system and release endorphins that make us feel good. Folks who enjoy a good laugh have lower blood pressure. At the start of a laugh the blood circulations increases, then begins to lower and eventually drops below the level you were at before the laughter. Your breathing becomes deepened and fills your blood with oxygen which lends to improving the flow of the blood through your body. Blood is the primary source for bringing oxygen and nutrients to the different parts of your body. Laughing makes your blood flow more efficient and beneficial.

Laughing reduces stress levels in the body. As stress levels are lowered, our ability to fight diseases increases. Not only does our ability to ward of sickness increase, but so does our attentiveness, alertness, heart rate, and pulse. If you have ever taken an exercise class you may recall the instructors goal - raising the heart rate. Raising the heart rate creates oxygen-rich blood to better feed your body.

Muscle tone and muscle strength is improved. Laughing involves the use of many muscles in the body. Muscles affected and inevitably given an "unplanned" workout include, diaphragm, abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg, and back muscles. Ever laughed so hard ti hurt? I know I have. As you are gasping for air you expand your lungs and take in cleansing breaths. Your muscles contract and relax making them stronger and healthier.

I could go on and on about the wonderful benefits your body receives during a good laugh, but in reality the biggest benefit of all is that it just feels good to laugh.
