with Iran continues to rise while the Iranian democratic government is still listed as terrorists. An independent group, represented by former Congressman Dick Armey, has assessed the basis for State Department's decision, finding State's decision was "fundamentally flawed." Dick Armey found MEK to be "a pro-democratic organization that for more than 40 years has worked to bring democracy and freedom to Iran...The MEK has repeatedly been a pawnsacrificed in US-Iranian and Franco-Iranian relations." Iran has managed to run a propaganda to paint these benevolent government of the people of Iran as a terrorist organization. A fundamental difference in ideologies exists between MEK and Iran's theocratic clerics - MEK believe in man's right to exercise free will and freedom of Speech while the Clerics clearly opposes that (their bigotry is law). A petition signed by more than five million Iraqis gave credit to MEK and their efforts in unifying Iraq's Diyala Province and acting as mediators between US forces and the Sunni tribal leaders and Iran sees these efforts by MEK as a challenge to them. If anti-war critics prevail in demanding a US withdrawal from Iraq, what will happen to MEK? The fate of MEK is one of but several considerations that must be well thought out prior to conducting a US withdrawal. Only the US Troops presence in Iraq is stopping Iran from seeking out and killing MEK members.
I am sure most of you can come up with more detailed reasons as to why we should stay in Iraq, bu the most important is our promise we made. The US has staked its reputation on Iraqi war. We made a promise to the Arab people and the people of Iraq that we will help them achieve Democracy, a concept that never existed in the entire history of that region. And if we relapse and withdraw, the Arab world will hold us responsible for what unfolds, and our credibility will be completely destroyed in the international arena, especially in Middle East. Recent world polls show large increases in favorable opinion of the USA (world average is 39.2%%) and a huge decline in anti-US feelings to 33.5%. We must stay in Iraq until the situation has improved, and as the situation improves, we must slowly withdraw over time. And before withdrawing, we must ensure the safety of MEK and other US Supporters in Iraq for the long run.
